PS Audio DirectStream DAC DA-Converter
"The revolution eats its children ..." After almost 5 years the renowned PS Audio Perfect Wave DAC is replaced by an innovative new development called "DirectStream Digital". PS Audio does not only break new ground in the digital audio field, but combines new scientific findings with adequate contemporary technology. According to PS Audio, the "DirectStream Digital DAC" is not a DAC with conventional technology, but rather a 'revolutionary' innovation in the search for optimal decoding and deconvolution of digital audio signals. This new technology digs deep into the digital structure of the respective medium (e.g. CD or high resolution download) and into the architecture of the playback device (DAC). " What is "DirectStream Digital" all about? First of all, we would like to point out the old academic problem of making complex facts and problems understandable by simplifying them and still being correct. The PS Audio "DirectStream Digital DAC" is a pure DSD DAC. DSD (Direct Stream Digital) is a format developed by Sony and Philips in earlier years for the SACD, which is about the processing of high-resolution digital audio data (high resolution) and the preservation on the master tapes in the recording studios. The processors were based on PCM technology (mostly 1 bit process). For those who would like to delve deeper into the history and complexity of DSD and the technical tidbits of "DirectStream Digital", we recommend reading the article by Andreas Koch in hifistatement.net on the one hand, and on the other hand we refer to the PS Audio Newsletter March 2014. With "DirectStream Digital", PS Audio is centrally concerned with the comprehensive screening of the last information contained on the studio/mother tapes and hidden in the respective medium, with simultaneous elimination of jitter. "DirectStream Digital" is not PCM-based - as is usually the case - but is equipped with its own very sophisticated technology that accepts incoming digital audio signals regardless of sampling frequency, format or bit-rate and converts them to DSD at 10 times the DSD standard's upsampling rate of 2.82 MHz. Furthermore, since the audio signals are read bit by bit, jitter and the negative influences associated with it are eliminated from a pure music signal. This means in the last consequence an extraordinary revaluation of the CD and at the same time highest pleasure with the rendition of data CD's and/or high resolution music material. At this point we would like to present just a few brief details of the DSD DAC. The new DSD DAC - upsamples all incoming signals to 10 times the DSD standard of 2.82 MHz = 28.2 MHz - does without filter settings - does without adjustable upsampling rates - has a lossless volume control in the control range of 0 - 100 % - has a large and clearly readable volume display - offers the possibility to adjust the 'gain' for the connection of power amplifiers. If present, you can continue to use your 'Bridge' and thus use the DSD DAC as a streamer. Likewise, the drive PWT remains a reliable and also high-resolution data supplier, which also on DVD burned DSD files and the DSD DAC bitperfectly passes.
